Glazier (Updated May 2009)
Three (3) years—Minimum of 4,200 hours of on-the-job training.
Glaziers install metal framing, metal doors, curtain wall, unitized systems, glass doors, door closers, insulated glass, glass railings, glass panels, skylight framing, glass in skylights, glass in wood or metal frames and glass in wood or metal doors, all plexiglass and polycarbonate used in place of glass, all sealant of glass to metal and metal to substrate, photovoltaic and electric glass etc. Glaziers also perform shielded metal arc welding.
Length of Apprenticeship:
Apprentices begin by attending one night of orientation.
Apprentices attend classroom instruction one 8 hour day every other week for the remainder of the program. Related instruction as required.
Must be at least 18 years old and show a birth certificate.
1st 6 months: 50% of journeyman wage
2nd 6 months: 55% of journeyman wage
3rd 6 months: 65% of journeyman wage
4th 6 months: 75% of journeyman wage
5th 6 months: 85% of journeyman wage
6th 6 months: 95% of journeyman wage
After three (3) years of Apprenticeship and upon certification of the Apprentice Coordinator and J.A.T.C. Trustees, he/she shall be given the Journeyman’s wage rate.
Must be a Legal Resident and have a Social Security Card.
Must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Certificate.
Must have a valid Driver’s License.
Must have reliable transportation.
Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Must be able to lift at least seventy (70) pounds.
Mathematics, mechanical drawing, geometry, and computer class.
Must be able to work at high levels from scaffolds and ladders.
Must be able to follow instructions.
Must be able to pay attention to details.
Complete application at the Apprenticeship office. Applications are accepted year round on the first and third Monday of every month, by appointment only. Call 708-443-9000
(Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.) Familiarity with construction work, glazing work and power tools is helpful.
Pay a $25 application fee (no personal checks).
Submit required documents with application.
Take and pass (70%) a written math aptitude test.
Applicants who pass the written test must seek employment with one of our signatory contractors and submit a “Letter of Intent to hire”.
Take and pass a drug test.
Applicants are then given an oral interview.
Applicant must pay a non-refundable Initiation Fee before beginning work.
When chosen, the applicant must take and pass a drug test.
